Player Discipline Policy
A fair and consistent approach to addressing player conduct concerns.
Purpose of This Policy
Bedford Eagles is committed to providing a safe, respectful and positive basketball environment for all players.
Players are expected to follow the Bedford Eagles Code of Conduct and demonstrate appropriate behaviour toward teammates, coaches, officials, opponents, volunteers and others involved in Club activities.
This policy provides a consistent process for addressing player behaviour that does not meet those expectations.
Our Approach to Player Discipline
Whenever appropriate, Bedford Eagles will use a progressive approach that gives players an opportunity to understand concerns, correct their behaviour and continue participating successfully with their team.
How a concern is addressed will depend on factors such as:
- The nature and seriousness of the behaviour
- The player's age and circumstances
- Whether the behaviour is an isolated or repeated concern
- The impact on teammates, coaches, officials or others
- Any previous discussions, warnings or disciplinary action
- Player safety and the safety of others
Serious incidents may require immediate action and do not necessarily need to proceed through every stage of progressive discipline.
1. Coach Discussion
For minor or first-time concerns, the coach will normally speak directly with the player about the behaviour and the expectations going forward.
The goal at this stage is to identify the concern early and give the player an opportunity to correct it.
2. Parent or Guardian Involvement
If the behaviour continues, or the concern warrants additional involvement, the player's parent or guardian may be contacted.
The coach or Club representative will explain the concern, previous steps taken and the behaviour expected from the player.
The player, family and coach should work together toward a reasonable resolution whenever possible.
3. Formal Warning
Continued or more significant behaviour may result in a formal warning from the coach or Bedford Eagles.
The warning may identify:
- The behaviour that must change
- The expectations moving forward
- Any steps required from the player
- Potential consequences if the behaviour continues
Parents or guardians will normally be informed when a formal warning is issued.
4. Suspension or Removal from an Activity
Where behaviour continues following previous intervention, or where an incident is sufficiently serious, a player may be removed from a practice, game, tournament or other team activity.
A temporary suspension from Club activities may also be imposed while a serious concern is reviewed.
The length and conditions of any suspension will depend on the circumstances and seriousness of the conduct.
5. Further Disciplinary Action
Serious or repeated violations may be referred to Bedford Eagles for further review.
Depending on the circumstances, further action may include:
- Additional conditions for continued participation
- A longer suspension
- Removal from a team
- Removal from a Bedford Eagles program
- Other action considered appropriate by the Club
Removal from a team or program will be reserved for circumstances where the seriousness or persistence of the conduct warrants that response.
Serious Incidents
Bedford Eagles is not required to begin with an informal warning where conduct is serious.
Examples of concerns that may require immediate Club involvement include serious bullying or harassment, threatening or aggressive behaviour, discriminatory conduct, serious disrespect toward officials or others, deliberate unsafe behaviour, or other conduct that significantly affects the safety or well-being of participants.
The Club may take immediate reasonable steps to protect participants while the matter is reviewed.
Code of Conduct
The Player Discipline Policy should be read together with the Bedford Eagles Code of Conduct.
The Code of Conduct explains the behaviour expected from players and the broader Bedford Eagles community. This policy explains how player conduct concerns may be addressed when those expectations are not met.
Attendance & Playing Time
Team attendance requirements and playing-time decisions are governed separately by the Bedford Eagles Athlete Pathways & Playing Time Guidelines.
For Division 1 and Division 2 Competitive (REP) teams, attendance, reliability, effort and other established factors may affect playing time in accordance with those guidelines.
Communication with Families
Bedford Eagles will make reasonable efforts to communicate significant player discipline concerns with the player's parent or guardian.
Depending on the circumstances, communication may come from the coach, a team representative or Bedford Eagles.
Families are expected to participate respectfully in the process and support reasonable efforts to address the player's behaviour.
Privacy & Confidentiality
Player discipline matters will be handled as privately as reasonably possible.
Bedford Eagles will not normally discuss disciplinary action involving another player with families who are not directly involved in that player's matter.
