Player Classification Processes

Player Classification Process

Helping Bedford Eagles form appropriate and balanced teams for the season.

What Is Player Classification?

Bedford Eagles welcomes players with a wide range of basketball experience and ability.

Player Classification allows independent evaluators to observe players before regular league rosters are formed. The process helps Bedford Eagles group players with others at a similar current level of play.

Players register in their age division. They do not register for a specific team, REC level, Division 1 or Division 2.

What Happens During Classification?

The classification process normally includes three sessions.

Players participate in basketball drills, skill activities, small-sided games and game play. This gives evaluators several opportunities to observe each player in different basketball situations.

Players may initially be organized alphabetically or into general groups. After the first session, players may be regrouped with athletes demonstrating a similar current level of play.

Regrouping allows evaluators to make more meaningful comparisons and helps Bedford Eagles form appropriate and balanced rosters.

What Do Evaluators Consider?

Basketball Skills

  • Ball handling
  • Passing
  • Shooting
  • Rebounding
  • Defensive fundamentals

Game Understanding

  • Decision-making
  • Court awareness
  • Positioning
  • Team play
  • Understanding game situations

Overall Approach

  • Effort
  • Attitude
  • Coachability
  • Confidence
  • Readiness for continued development

Attendance Matters

Players should try and attend all scheduled classification sessions whenever possible.

Each session gives evaluators additional information about the player. Missing a session may limit the information available when rosters are formed.

If a player cannot attend a scheduled session, families should follow the absence instructions provided with the classification schedule.

How Are Rosters Formed?

After classification is complete, Bedford Eagles reviews the evaluation results and forms available rosters based on player classification, appropriate skill grouping and roster balance.

Final placement also depends on registration priority, available roster space and the number of teams Bedford Eagles can reasonably support.

Metro League teams are submitted to the Metro Basketball League for seeding into the appropriate level of competition.

Classification Does Not Guarantee Roster Placement

The number of teams offered in each age group may be limited by available gym space, qualified coaches and roster capacity.

Where demand exceeds available roster space, Bedford Eagles’ Registration Priority Protocol applies.

Player Classification Quick Answers

Common questions about classification and roster placement.

Are classifications the same as tryouts?

Classification includes player evaluation, but its purpose is to assess players across an age division and support appropriate roster placement.

Does every player receive a roster position?

No. Placement depends on classification results, registration priority, available roster space, coaches, gym capacity and the number of teams Bedford Eagles can support.

Can we request a particular friend, coach or team?

Bedford Eagles cannot normally accommodate these requests. Rosters are formed based on classification results, appropriate player grouping, roster balance and overall program needs.
